Course Title
The Book of Ecclesiastes
BIS 181.1/281.1
Course Description
In short, Ecclesiastes offers philosophy for living a life of joy in a world where we experience no true control; where we cannot know or dictate the future or its outcomes with simplistic formulas, wisdom, hard work, or even religion. It asks the existential questions like, “What is the meaning of life?”, and further yet, “What is the meaning of death?” In unique fashion, Ecclesiastes tackles these questions and allows us to truly feel it and look upon it without glancing away. Uniquely, it explores the apparent pointlessness of living without the insult of trite or simplistic answers. For the disillusioned, it offers empathetic insight; for those still full of hopeful naivete, it offers the bitter taste of reality. Ecclesiastes connects to the disillusioned and answers them with honesty, void of cliche, and paints the picture as bleakly as possible, so as to dispel the illusions of those who still cling to them.
